Do Not Treat “Men’s Formula” as a Diagnosis

A bottle cannot legally transform a supplement into a proven treatment for disease through clever wording. Be cautious when a seller promises to cure, reverse, or replace medical care. Report serious adverse events and suspicious products to the FDA.

Many consumers assume a product on a store shelf was tested and approved by the FDA for safety and effectiveness. The FDA states that it does not approve dietary supplements or their labeling before marketing in the same way it approves drugs, and it does not test every supplement before sale.
This makes manufacturer quality systems and independent verification important. Look for a clearly identified company, contact information, lot number, transparent label, and credible third-party testing. The USP Verified Mark, for example, is awarded to products that meet the program’s testing and evaluation requirements. Other certification programs exist, especially for athletes concerned about prohibited substances. Verify a mark in the certifier’s own database because logos can be copied.

“Whole-food,” “fermented,” “raw,” or “food-based” does not automatically mean better absorbed, safer, or more effective. Compare the actual nutrient form, dose, evidence, testing, and cost. Plant imagery on the label is not a quality standard.
Store products as directed and away from children. Iron-containing supplements and gummy vitamins can be particularly hazardous if mistaken for candy. Do not use a product with damaged seals, unusual odor, discoloration, or unclear sourcing.
